Mechanical Sculptures by Jennifer Townley

In 2008 Jennifer Townley completed her degree in Art Science at the Royal Academy of Fine Art in The Hague. Since then she has been working as an independent artist, creating mechanical sculptures that often move very slowly. Powered by electric motors her machines generate intense repetitive movements and changing patterns that subtly interfere with the spectators mind. Shapes are constantly being distorted and transformed, patterns convert smoothly into new patterns and independent forms seemingly unite. Within kinetic art her work can be distinguished by a smooth and peaceful operation and detailed finish and appearance.

Morphogenetic Freehand Etchings By Artist John Franzen

Few years ago we featured John Franzen’s “Each Line One Breath” – a morphogenetic freehand drawings. In the years since he has begun drawing into 2mm black coated copper and brass plates with a needle, creating gorgeous etchings, from which he produces a small series of discharge prints.

"His meditative drawing process starts a single straight line from the top of the plate to the bottom, which is followed by an attempt to copy that line as precisely as possible. Each subsequent line results in a slight straying from the original line, exaggerating the original imperfections. His breathing controls the line, and the line also controls his breathing, it is incredible to watch. See the videos below." text by Booooooom

Shylight by Studio DRIFT

Studio DRIFT, an artistic team from the Netherlands, has created lamps that blossom and twirl like flowers. “We’ve always been very fascinated by movements in nature, and this is how we started the project that we call Shylight,” the team says.

The satisfaction in our work comes from the moment the audience engages with the piece and they forget where they are, who they are, and they discover this new world between nature and technology.

The Room on the Roof by i29 Architects

Located in Amsterdam's Dam Square, the De Bijenkorf department store was first built in 1909 as a gorgeously cresselated neo-gothic structure pierced by a distinctive central turret. Since it was built, that tower has been mostly for show, but thanks to a partnership between the interior architects i29 and the nearby Rijksmuseum, De Bijenkorf is now turning the tower into a beautiful design haven. Called the Room on the Roof, the De Bijenkorf tower has been transformed into a bright, modern design studio, complete with a kitchen, a day bed, a sitting room, and a telescope. via

"The biggest challenge of designing the space was simply the size of the floor area: just 16 square meters," i29 directors Jaspar Jansen and Jeroen Dellensen told me by email. "That was one of the reasons why we ended up with a vertical installation, which creates a 'living cabinet' that allows artists-in-residence to experience the tower on different levels."

Splashy Letter Art by Niels Shoe Meulman

Having featured Niels Shoe Meulman’s calligraphy in 2012 and 2013, it seems like a good time to check up on the artist. This year he is using pearlized acrylic paint which changes colors when viewing at different angles. It is also fascinating to see images of his painting process showing the various brushstroke layers that form his eye-catching work.

The Rapid Eye

Menno Fokma and Floris Vos (FLORIS+MENNO) directed a dark short movie "The Rapid Eye"."The Rapid Eye is a short experimental art & fashion film which is born from the personal need to experiment with a fragmented way of storytelling, practical effects, aesthetics and evoking emotions on a subconscious level. We started the film by experimenting and recording a lot of different scenes we had in mind. Mostly by just the 2 of us. We paid attention to an intuitive way of working. During the process we connected the dots and developed our script into something bigger. With limited budget we managed to arrange locations and a great crew to shoot the spine of the film. We worked together with the amazing team from Box Of Toys Audio. They recorded vocals with a Scandinavian Yojk singer, Juhán Niila Stålka, and custom samples on the HMS Belfast warship in London."

Phonebloks

A phone only lasts a couple of years before it breaks or becomes obsolete. Although it's often just one part which killed it we throw everything away since it's almost impossible to repair or upgrade. But Dutch designer Dave Hakkens has another view on this problem. He just rethinks the way a phone may be constructed taking in account bricks based system Phonebloks. With functional modules you can construct a phone that can fit your needs of the moment, or the needs of particular audience or whatever you want.
