The Wanderlust of #Vanlife

“The Wanderlust of #Vanlife” is a short documentary, produced by The Atlantic, focusing on the people who choose to undertake the van lifestyle and the community it’s created.

"In 2011, Foster Huntington (Instagram) created the #vanlife Instagram hashtag, and unexpectedly spawned hundreds of thousands of posts and a family of eager followers. It became a community of like-minded individuals who delight in the kind of adventure you can only get by traveling through the wilderness in a clunky, decades-old vehicle. In this documentary, we follow a group of #vanlife enthusiasts to uncover what the lifestyle means to them."

James Rawson Art

Artist James Rawson resides in Norfolk, England and is a postmodern pop artist. Predominantly working in the medium of collage and painting, Rawson found no inspiration in the beautiful Norfolk landscape he grew up in; instead, the landscape of pop culture fed his artistic drive.

James’ work blurs the boundaries between collage and painting, using preparatory paper collages as reference for his larger paintings. He aims to reflect the multi-layered visual experience we all live in. Appropriating the very images that have become implicit in our society, James’ work disturbs our sense of reality and confuses our perception of popular culture.

Facebook Team Posters by Tim Belonax

Airbnb’s graphic design lead Tim Belonax shows off an incredible selection of his posters, created during his work with Facebook Analog Research Laboratorytimbelonax.com/facebookposters / via Readymag

The walls at Facebook speak. Its chosen dialect is the poster. Covering walls and conference rooms, these posters voice a history that few of its millions of users will ever hear. Over three and a half years working at Facebook I had the pleasure of questioning, translating, and synthesizing the beliefs, emotions, and activities of this unique community. Below is a small selection of some of my favorite prints.

(De)hydrate by Henry Hargreaves

When New Zealand-based artist Henry Hargreaves heard a health professional call soda “the cigarettes of our generation”, he wanted to find a way to represent the risk visually.

He decided to show what happens after the water in a drink is boiled away. Once boiled, he then took the remaining substance, a mixture of sugar, colouring and other byproducts, and poured it into a silicon lollipop mould. “I thought lollipops were the perfect fit because to me that’s what a soft drink is; it’s kind of a lollipop dressed up as a soda, or a kind of adult lollipop.

The Arsenal Flat in Paris

"H2o architectes designed the Arsenal Flat in Paris for a couple that have two children. The apartment isn’t your typical design. The interior is laid out to include three connected living spaces that are open but slightly partitioned by built-in bookcases with one angled side, which references the building’s sloped roofline."

Pencil Sculptures by Jasenko Đorđević

Born in Tulza, Bosnia, Jasenko Đorđević uses an X-acto knife and tiny chisel to carve detailed pencil-tip sculptures. The result resembles something made from stone or charred wood. Đorđević was first inspired to carve pencils after seeing the work of Dalton Ghetti.

Picar - Pedal-powered Morgan's Trike

The Ekomobil company of Minsk has created a pedal-powered replica of Morgan’s trike. Based on drawings of the very first racing models, the cunning Picar lives up to the classic’s riveted retro glory, with a wood veneer dash, leather trim and polished faux exhaust pipes emerging from cylinders of a faux engine.

Powered by your breakfast, the Picar’s chain drivetrain runs through a three-speed Shimano Nexus hub on the rear wheel. An optional battery pack powers an audio player, turn indicators and headlights. There’s even a human-electric hybrid version available, with a 1000-watt motor capable of pushing the car to a brisk 25mph. And rest assured, although a youthful outlook is required to drive the Picar, actual youth is not; the car’s single-seat cockpit easily accommodates drivers as tall as six feet.

Blue-pencil Wild-Man Drawings by Zachari Logan

"Blue pencil drawings by Canadian artist Zachari Logan depicting a man engulfed by plants, animals, and insects. Logan uses himself as a model for his drawings and paintings, turning his elaborate studies of nature to explore intersections between masculinity, identity, memory and place. His idea of a man entwined with nature, a life unfamiliar to most of us, is his concept of a unified man who Zachari believes has disappeared in the 21st century."

"Chained" Street Art by Edoardo Tresoldi and Gonzalo Borondo

"This is a brilliant street art piece made by wire sculptor Edoardo Tresoldi and muralist Gonzalo Borondo. Titled “Chained,” also the name of the art event organized by gallery Wunderkammern who invited nine important urban artists to create outdoor installations in the city of Milan. An exhibition focused on the food chain, and how humans are part of this biological community and “only one of many elements in a chain dependent on the entire system.”
